It starts with the family, where my aunt, a bra sampler maker in New York for over 45 years stressed the importance of proper fit and impeccable construction when teaching me to sew. It also starts in Latin America, where I am from, and where the concept of The Full Cup – beautiful, sexy, comfortable lingerie intended to make you feel beautiful from the inside out – is far from unusual. The Full Cup strives to bring that sensibility and possibility to the U.S., to make our stores a Mecca of the best brands available in the US and a leader in the bra fitting industry. Every woman deserves to “feel beautiful underneath” no matter what her breast size. The Full Cup’s mission is to provide the best selection, the most current inventory and of course...the most personable and knowledgeable staff. This is how it all started. Buying a bra should be a wonderful experience...not drudgery. But for too many women, especially those who wear cup sizes D-K, it is not. Which is where The Full Cup comes in. So how did The Full Cup come to be? Here’s the story from the founder: My parents moved to the Caribbean when I was a little girl. Although we lived close to the "Metropolis" and the island had a decent mall, my mom did most of the shopping in the "town." We shopped in a family-owned department store and each department had a specialist. The specialist in the fine lingerie department was Annie; she was without a doubt an expert in her field and catered to her customers. She fitted me for my first "training bra" and taught me how to select and wear a bra. I remember how embarrassed I was when she came into the dressing room to see if I had a good fit, but she put me at ease with her good sense of humor and determination to find the right size bra for me. She always found the perfect bra for me and she made sure that I had pretty underwear to match. But most of all, she made the buying experience memorable and fun. Statistics show that 85 percent of women today are wearing the wrong bra size. For years, I was one of those women, and I can tell you that those early days of "fun" bra shopping became drudgery when I grew older, wore a bigger size, and moved back to the U.S. I tried bra after bra at store after store and almost always came back with nothing. Worse, I’d come back with compromise bras that were uncomfortable. I wanted to buy a comfortable, well-fitted bra. Among other things, it made a huge difference in how the rest of my clothes fit and how I felt about myself. It was frustrating. Just because I was a DD – or so I was told for years by people who weren’t as trained as staff at The Full Cup – I didn’t see why I couldn’t feel and look as sexy as all the other girls with smaller cup sizes and a wider range of choices in the average American store and was it too much to ask for a bit of style with that big bra? Did they have to look so…utilitarian? I could not understand why it was so difficult to find good bras for the "fuller busted woman" like me. Armed with my family background, my sewing expertise and my business experience, I decided to do something about it. The result is The Full Cup. The name "The Full Cup" came from my husband, his contribution to this exciting and much-needed business. It’s the age of the Internet. Naturally, we started out thinking we’d serve customer via a web-based business. But we learned early on that some things, like bra fitting, are better done old school. Years of fitting customers at our first store in Virginia Beach have demonstrated the many variables involved in finding the right bra for a customer, such as fit from a specific brand, style, fabric and construction. All these factors must be taken into consideration when fitting a bra and serving the customer well. The Full Cup Staff |
